The Pre-Retina Display MacBook Pro

Marco Arment enumerates the reasons, “Why the 2012 non-Retina MacBook Pro still sells.”

As we’ve progressed toward thinner, lighter, more integrated Macs, we’ve paid dearly in upgradeability, versatility, and value. There are many Macs to choose from today, but in some ways, we have less choice than ever.

When Apple introduced the 3rd generation MacBook Pro (MBP) back in the middle of 2012, it then came with the Retina Display and solid-state drives (SSDs) in lieu of the hard-disk drives (HDDs), but dismissed the optical drive altogether. Moreover, you cannot upgrade the memory (RAM) by yourself, it has to be pre-packaged when you buy it.

I own an Early 2011 13-inch Macbook Pro, and I’ll probably hold back from upgrading to the latest MBP in the near future. Why? Here are my reasons: Check out my reasons after the jump »

Waze vs. Google Maps vs. Apple Maps

Thrillist enumerates their reasons ‘Why You Should Ditch Google Maps for Apple Maps‘.

The points mentioned in the article may perhaps be valid if you’re living in U.S. But here in the Philippines, your best bet would be Waze. Why?

It offers important data like traffic, accidents, the police, etc. and those are actually crowd-sourced. Google Maps and Apple Maps have no traffic data in the Philippines;
Public transportation data is basically non-existent for Google Maps and Apple Maps in the Philippines;
Don’t get me started with 3D and/or satellite view of Google Maps and Apple Maps, when they still show our 30-storey office building as plain earth.

Nevertheless, I wish you could use Siri to search for locations via the Waze app.

We need 3D Touch capability in Downcast app too

Now that the Castro podcast app has gone free, I was able to take it for a spin, and I was impressed by its 3D Touch capability, so that you can instantaneously launch and play your favorite podcast channel (or playlist, perhaps?) straight from the home screen.

Thus, I’m contemplating of switching to this app instead of my go-to app for podcasts — Downcast. So, here’s a challenge to the developers of Downcast — update your app to integrate 3D Touch, and you can keep me as your loyal user/customer/endorser.

Unleash the beast within the iPhone 6s Plus

Two years and my iPhone 5s still appeared to be on top of its game. Yet, it was time to upgrade — to catch up with the latest and greatest. I’m pretty sure there’s nowhere else to look but towards the direction of the iPhone 6s Plus.

Knockoffs are nowhere near the real deal

GooPhone is one of those Android device manufacturers that make clones of the iPhone. With the recent unveiling of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, GooPhone has come out with the GooPhone I6S, which is the same size and form factor as that of the iPhone 6S and made to appear to run iOS 8.

I have tried customizing an Android device (a Samsung Galaxy S2) before, changing the launcher and icons to make it look like the latest iPhone. Then, after spending quite a number of hours customizing its appearance, it struck me–no matter how much time I spend on customization, no matter the extent of every detail I copy, it is still an Android device pretending to be an iPhone.

So, heed my advice: if you want an iPhone for a smartphone, save and spend on an iPhone. Custom-making an Android device to make it look like an iPhone is just a pathetic way of showing how much you really want an iPhone. After all, knockoffs are nowhere near the real deal.

Make Space for iPad Pro — the 12.9-inch Apple tablet

Stayed really late last night to watch the Apple Event on my Apple TV. After the boring discussions about the Apple Watch, Tim Cook eventually introduced the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

At 12.9-inch diagonal size, the screen is much like most laptops there currently are in the market. I surmise it is now positioned to take on the laptop market this time. That is, if those who consider replacing their work laptop with the iPad Pro are not deterred by the idea of expending additional dough for the Smart Keyboard and/or Apple Pencil.

Adventures at Manila Ocean Park

I was playing with Apple’s iMovie app in my iPhone yesterday, and I found an option to create movies from Trailer templates. So I tried, and I had a few clips from our Manila Ocean Park trip last February lying around.

This movie I created for like 30 minutes or so only with my iPhone 5S and the iMovie app. Here goes:

There's no option in the Accounts & sync settings. — There’s no option in the Accounts & sync settings.

Apparently, you can’t! Or, at least that’s how it is in my LG G2.

That’s how Android cannot totally win me over iOS. There are just a lot of problems they can’t seem to fix.
