Looking at the stats of this site, I’m sure many are already looking for a copy of the law. I have good and bad news: the good news–I have a copy of the law; the bad–I have a bad copy.

As expected, there were no changes in the progressive tax table. Our lawmakers and our President sure have gained credits for themselves for passing the bill into law. But it only did affect the personal exemptions allowed for most of us taxpayers. Only a part of the taxable income was adjusted, not the whole.
Come to think of it, rice in 1997 was (at the maximum, maybe) P20 per kilo. Now, how much is it? You can answer that question. That’s basically how inflation has gone up since 1997, when the original law (RA 8424) was enacted.

Oftentimes in our lives we were confronted with two roads ahead of us, but did we really make the wise decisions?

Celtics and Lakers, Reliving the Rivalry
I initially wagered for a Celtics-Spurs NBA Finals. But unfortunately the other day, the Lakers beat the Spurs to advance to the 2008 NBA Finals. Eventually, my reason for looking forward to an exciting NBA Finals started to dwindle.
But today I realized the Finals won’t be that boring after all. On the contrary, this could be the most interesting NBA Finals since the turn of the century as the Boston Celtics and the LA Lakers relive their rivalry over the hardcourt.
The Blogging Road
A very good friend, Wilson, is keeping himself busy over at 21 Wilson Street. Yeah, he’s into blogging as well. I reserved this post to welcome him to the blogging world. Keep those great posts coming, Wilson! I highly recommend visiting his site.
The Fedora Experience
I’m currently in fedora. And I’m starting to like it.
My taste of Linux started with the Ubuntu experience. Then when my wireless card failed to work with the latest version Hardy, I tried PCLinuxOS and then OpenSuse. Some more disappointments with Suse and I found myself downloading the latest release of Fedora (Fedora 9, Sulphur).
My wireless card didn’t initially work with the live media booting from the cd, but worked like a breeze when it was installed into the harddrive. And now I’m liking the interface (with GNOME). Two concerns:
- Installing Adobe Flash Plugin for Firefox – which you really can’t install from within Firefox. You’ll need to install it manually. No problem, though, with some tutorials in the web like this link, which also includes other items one may want to install.
- Desktop Effects – It looks like my hardware (NVIDIA) does not work with the new xorg. No problem, though. I just can’t have that eyecandy effect yet, which I don’t really care. It’s just aesthetic.
So, for all ye Linux fans out there, the new Fedora is surely a great fresh release distro to try out.
Two Years Later
May 17, 2008 – Deuts.NET celebrates two years of online existence with a new look.
Two years, 396 posts, and 1,234 comments later, Deuts.NET has clearly reached a milestone. A time to reflect, a reason to celebrate, and a season to look forward to two more years and beyond.
PNB and Allied Bank Merger
Philippine National Bank and Allied Banking Corp., which are both owned by tycoon Lucio Tan, have approved a plan to merge to become the country’s fourth largest bank in terms of assets. The merged bank will retain the name Philippine National Bank.
The Tax Reform Act, A Decade Old
Republic Act 8424 (Philippine Law), otherwise known as the Tax Reform Act of 1997 or the Revised National Internal Revenue Code (NIRC) of 1997, which became effective in 1998, is already more than a decade old law. It’s basically a comprehensive law that covers all national taxes from income tax for individuals and corporations, estate and donor’s tax, value added tax, other percentage taxes, excise tax on certain goods, and documentary stamp taxes.
The law is old enough that, as a matter of fact, certain provisions have already been revised just like the income tax for corporations and the Expanded Value Added Tax. What marvels me is why there’s no change, or at least any proposed changes underway (none that I heard of), in income tax for individuals.
