A mirrorless interchangeable lens camera is one with usually the same sensor size as that of the DSLR but without the mirror that reflects the image frame into the pentaprism and further into the optical viewfinder. It’s much like what you see in compact point-and-shoot cameras and camera phones but with the added benefits of the capability to employ quality but expensive lenses you see in the photography world.

Digital Photographer Philippines (DPP) has the list of advantages and disadvantages to offer about the mirrorless interchangeable lens systems:

Advantages:

  • More compact and lighter;
  • Lens mechanics;
  • Faster burst modes;

Disadvantages:

  • Sensor continually exposed, which may attract more dust;
  • Electronic viewfinders are not as good as optical;
  • Contrast autofocus isn’t as fast as phase detection;

So, are we ready to move from Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) to the mirrorless camera technology?

Photography is not just about cameras, lenses, or composition. It’s also about the play of light. So if there are remote flash triggers that go with these mirrorless cameras, as well as future technological advancements and discoveries lead to minimizing the effect (if not eliminating) the disadvantages described above, then I’d say bring it on!
