Why His Airness?

Reading through some articles and blogs about Lebron James’ 48-point performance during the Game 5 of this year’s Eastern Conference Finals, I came to realize that in every NBA superstar stint, Michael Jordan will always be the barometer for them all.

lebron-james.jpgJames’ performance in the last game (Game 5) is truly exceptional, scoring 29 of his team’s last 30 points, and scoring his team’s last 25 points. It was simply Lebron James versus Detroit Pistons especially in the last 16 minutes of the game (inclusive of the two overtime minutes).

But I kept wondering why Michael Jordan-like performance is always the gauge to measure any other current NBA superstar’s game. Why MJ? Why not the greatness of the likes of Jonathan Bender, Darius Miles, Ricky Davis, Pau Gasol, Allen Iverson, Ray Allen, Desagana Diop, and Art Long?

  1. The players you mentioned are mediocre players. You should have named players like Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Rick Barry, Julius Erving and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to name a few.

If you ask me, the reason why Michael Jordan is always used as the measuring stick for upcoming stars is because MJ is the player who has done almost everything. He was good at both ends of the court, offensively and defensively. He was successful in the collegiate and professional level. ’95 NBA Rookie of the Year, ’88 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, 5 time league MVP, 6 time Finals MVP, several scoring titles, Career average of 30.1 ppg, 6 championship rings, named one of the 50 Greatest Players in the history of the NBA, 2000 ESPY Athlete of the Century, 2000 ESPY Male Athlete Decade Award (1990s), 2000 ESPY Pro Basketballer Decade Award (1990s), etc.

Btw, I’m a big fan of His Airness. Hehe 😀

  2. Hahaha! You actually took it seriously huh. It was meant to be a joke. Well, those are the type of players a friend of mine actually liked to draft and play with when we had our NBA Live tournaments sometime in the past.

Nevertheless, MJ is I think everyone’s favorite (unless maybe if you’re a big time die-hard fan of Utah Jazz :)). I’ve not yet met so far a person who doesn’t like him. It should be the main reason behind it!

  3. Hey, I’m back just for today hehehe. Unfortunately, Utah Jazz didn’t make it to the finals. It’s the team to beat in nba live what? I forgot! Right men?
