Fuel Economy Comparison Among Philippine Cars

Topgear.com.ph published the fuel economy test results of various cars in their article, “Department of Energy, Petron release results of 70-vehicle fuel economy run“:

Well, the numbers are finally out. A total 70 different vehicles from 22 car manufacturers took part in the government-sanctioned test, with varying results. Take note: The run was performed on a highway setting. Drivers embarked on the 280km drive from Angeles through SCTEX, TPLEX and back.

Among the vehicles fuel economy numbers, here are some important observations:

  1. My car, the Subaru XV, returned 19.46km/L only, which is quite below average. Perhaps, that’s because of the All-Wheel Drive system that’s pre-installed in all Subaru cars.
  2. The Isuzu D-Max pickup returned the highest fuel economy figure. That’s quite expected, but it was too high at 38.46km/L — and a diesel engine at that.
  3. The Honda Jazz is one fuel efficient hatchback at 28.60km/L. That’s even higher than the 1.2L  Mitsubishi Mirage.

Therefore, the next time I’m on the market for a new car, perhaps I should really be considering the Isuzu D-Max and the Honda Jazz.
